Bank of Scotland is proud to sponsor the 2010/11 Jolomo Awards, a competition that seeks out and recognises emerging artists who paint the Scottish landscape.

The visual arts reflect and record our lives. Scottish landscape is extraordinary by any standard. When seen through the lens of the landscape painter, what is incredibly ancient is reinterpreted and captured for the moment.

The Jolomo Awards are the pre-eminent award for artists in Scotland. They are held in high regard within the arts, and by the academic sector and the wider public in Scotland. Lloyds Banking Group has sponsored the Awards since their inception and we are delighted to continue our partnership.

Bank of Scotland is a long-standing supporter of the arts and we work with a number of arts organisations across the country. We have a strong interest in emerging talent in many spheres. The Jolomo Awards support the best of Scotland’s emerging landscape artists.

Our best wishes to all the artists who enter the competition.

Despite widely held views to the contrary, newspapers are about more than bad news. Yes, the big events which stay long in the memory are often for all the wrong reasons, but on a daily basis papers like The Scotsman laud success and cover positive aspects of life as much as the negative. Maybe not as the lead story on the front page, but there nonetheless.

In particular, The Scotsman is at the forefront of reporting on and celebrating the achievements of artists and performers in Scotland and there is much for us to celebrate. We are blessed not only with a landscape which inspires, but a rich vein of artistic talent which over many years has taken full advantage of the stunning opportunities Scotland presents. We have a major role to play in recognising achievement and encouraging native talent and our support of the Jolomo Awards is one way of doing that.
